In the Top 50—again!

My friend Chris Weiermiller and I submitted a story idea to the Comic Book Challenge in early June.  The contest is a sort of American Idol for aspiring comic book writers and artists.  The contest is put on by Platinum Studios down in LA, with the final contestant winner getting paid to create their story idea (with merchandising deal to boot).

Shangri-LaChris and I entered the contest last year and made the Top 50 with our story Black Thursday.  Though we didn't move any further in the contest after that, I'm happy to announce that Chris and I have made the Top 50 once again

As the next step, I will be putting together a video pitch which will be shown to the judges for the contest.  If we can make the cut to the Top 10, the contest will move on to rounds of internet voting....so we'll be needing your HELP!

But no point in counting our chickens before they're hatched...we're currently working hard on getting ready for the pitch.  I don't want to reveal too much about it at this point -- but all the pitches will be available online after ComicCon.

Chris and I may be doing an interview or two as we lead up to the pitch, so I'll be sure to link from here.  Good Luck to all the contestants, and Good Luck to us!

Back in Black.

Phillip BroadwoodApologies for the lack of posts, there have been quite a few changes going on in my life.  All positive...I will be updating the blog with more news on this in the future.  In the meantime, here's news on one of the things that have been taking up my time:  Black Thursday, the graphic novel concept that I have been working on with my artist friend Chris Weiermiller.

Chris and I have spent much time over the last few months developing the story and artwork for the first issue, in order to start approaching publishers with our concept.  The finished work would be a graphic novel appearing in 8 installments.

We are currently in preliminary talks with a few publishing houses and will be evaluating our course of action.  In the meantime, please check out the Black Thursday website that we set up to showcase the artwork and story!

New portfolios are up.

I've added some new information to the portfolios section. As of now I have information on some projects I have done in the areas of web design, identity design, and traditional art. As other projects move forward I will be adding new entries as well as new portfolio areas.

I whipped up some quick JavaScript to get the art portfolio moving, but as time allows I would like to implement this in a more sophisticated fashion.

Enjoy!

No cigar.

Thanks for all the support, everybody!  We were not selected to get into the Final 10 for the Comic Book Challenge, but it was still a great experience and an honor to be chosen among so many great artists and writers.

Rest assured, we are still working on this project, and there are a few other projects in the works as well... :)

Getting our names out there.

The site is slowly shaping up, though I still have several tweaks to make.  Chris Weiermiller has also started up a portfolio site, located at the appropriately named chrisweiermiller.com.

We've also been interviewed by local culture site SFist.  We talk about our project, our city and the strangeness that waits around every corner in North Beach.  Here's the interview.

We made the Top 50!

My friend Chris Weiermiller and I submitted a story idea to the Comic Book Challenge at the end of May.  The contest is a sort of American Idol for aspiring comic book writers and artists.  The contest is put on by Platinum Studios down in LA, with the final contestant winner getting paid to create their story idea (with merchandising deal to boot).

If you're interested, see our story idea HERE!

Well, Chris and I have made the Top 50!  As the next step, we'll be heading down to Comic-Con on July 26th to pitch the concept to a panel of 5 judges.  As I am the writer, I will have to pitch the concept alone, but Chris will be preparing some art for use as a visual aid during the pitch.

As part of the media sponsorship, AT&T has also been promoting the contest at their blue room.

Chris and I will be doing an interview or two as we lead up to the pitch, so I'll be sure to link from here.  Good Luck to all the contestants, and Good Luck to us!
